A. Rough green timbers go into the dry kilns full sawn. There will be some shrinkage during the process, usually 1/16” - 1/8” in thinkness and 1/8” - 1/4” in width (this may vary slightly) Timbers will come out with a suntan appearance and can have a faded mark where kiln sticks were placed. There also may be checking. Some pieces will have it and some will not. We are constantly trying to improve our processes to minimize kiln damage. Our products are dried with state of the art conventional kilns utilizing a computer controlled low pressure steam system. None of our products are microwaved.

B. Exposed beams for appearance KD Bridger Forest Products product is wane free, clean, on the grade ordered and packaged to stay clean until installation. We always strive to ship on the upper end of the various grade spectrums, however our products can vary in this manner, e.g.: customer orders 6x12 - 16 #1 exposed FOHC, the piece is shipped clear or dense select structural, the next time he orders it is on grade, even upper end of the spectrum but the customer is unhappy and we are both in trouble. This is why educating our customers is so important.

C. Finished textures Available - We offer three different textures or surfaces on our products, the first is mill run rough as described (in A) above. The second is band resawn after drying (dead accurate to any size specified), very smooth, even and bright band sawn texture, can resaw up to 24” square. The Third is conventional planer surfacing. We can S4S up to 16x18. Our sawmill uses only band saws in the manufacturing process so the texture is fairly uniform even on the Mill Run rough.

D.  Green vs. Kiln Dried - We feel there is no comparison. Not only is the green timber much heavier than a KD timber, it will check far more severely after installation. It may develop mold problems or warp or twist. There are also problems with stains and other finishes applied to green timbers.

What is the story with RF drying process?

The RF drying process is not new to the industry. This technology has been around for at least 30 years. We do not feel this is an effective way to best produce quality KD products. It is not a “NEW REVOLUTIONARY PROCESS” and in our opinion there is very little information out regarding the effects of RF drying on cell structure damage etc. The company selling the equipment went out of business a couple of years ago forcing the one company using the process to buy what was left of the company. It is also our understanding that the same company is doing a lot of drying in off site conventional kilns.

What about pitch pockets or seams leaking pitch in KD timbers?

First of all, we have very few timbers with pitch pockets or seams and we avoid cutting this type of timber in our KD product line. However our drying process will set or dry any pitch that might be present. We have never had a complaint or claim for a pitch problem.

Are your products graded before or after drying?

All of our products are graded both before and after the drying process to insure the highest possible quality.

What moisture content can we expect?

We target different moisture contents on our various products. 1” clean finish and 2” clears 10-20%, 2 “ fascia and 4” #2 Btr and all #1 & Btr. 19%. We have never had a claim on timbers moving after installation.

What is the procedure if there is a problem with one of your products?

We stand behind our products 100%. We encourage careful inspection upon delivery. If there is a problem usually a photo emailed will be enough for us to see the problem and deal with it accordingly. Please be assured we do everything possible to satisfy our customer’s needs and we cover all reasonable expenses to resolve any problem with any of our products.
